Sex as Subversion, Fantasy & Power: The Beggars Benison Club Exhibition 2021

Sex as Subversion, Fantasy & Power: The Beggars Benison Club is a new exhibition project brought together by students of the University of St Andrews MLitt in Museum and Gallery Studies for 2020/21.  The Beggars Benison was an all-male secret social club based in Anstruther between 1732 and 1836.  The club was established to enable all-male sexual liberation and due to its sensitive nature, the collection has not previously been publicly exhibited.  This year an exhibition in the Wardlaw Museum and digital content will focus on sexual, social and gender histories that lie behind the collection whilst also drawing on these to explore and talk about the parallel contemporary issues such as consent, sexual expression and gender identity.  You can find out more about the project and the upcoming onsite exhibition at the Wardlaw Museum on the website.  The products in the range feature the logo of the exhibition - shop now.
